"Ganga is a traditional form of rural two-part singing. Women composed and sang ganga as a way of expressing their worries and pain, as well as their joys and hopes. We inherit ganga from our foremothers and create a safe space in which we sing about the challenges women continue to face today, making their experiences visible as they merge with the experiences of all of us. Respecting its distinctive vocal technique and the traditional ten-syllable verse, we perform ganga over an electronic soundscape, reinterpreting old songs through a contemporary lens while also writing original lyrics." — Kolektiv Vakat
Kolektiv Vakat reimagines the traditional singing practice of ganga through a contemporary, socially engaged artistic approach, creating a new language of resistance.
Before Breakfast, the first of six performances in a new cycle taking place around the family dining table, explores themes such as inherited identity, internalised behavioural patterns, transgenerational trauma, the environments that shape us, and our capacity for resistance through a series of archetypal motifs.
