Why do we sing Partisan songs? Why now?

A little more than 80 years ago, the greatest war in human history came to an end. After years of bloody fighting that engulfed much of the world, the thunder of weapons finally fell silent. A new world began to rise from the ashes, striving to ensure that such a catastrophe would never happen again.

In the forests and mountains of the Balkans, Partisans sang about the struggle against fascism and about the courage and determination to defend freedom. Their energy and strength were woven into Partisan songs, where they live on to this day.

Yet today, nearly a century later, the world is still shaken by war, destruction and division. Senseless killing and devastation have, sadly, never truly ceased. That is why we sing Partisan songs again, standing firm in the face of the dark clouds of war that constantly threaten to take hold of people's minds and hearts. Because war always brings suffering and widespread ruin.

By singing Partisan songs, by singing about the pain and heroism of ordinary people, we call upon the power of unity and solidarity to declare without hesitation: hatred and violence will not prevail!

And we will keep singing them today, tomorrow, and in the years to come. We will sing them for as long as it takes—until the weapons are laid down and the immense resources and human lives now spent on destruction are devoted instead to building a more beautiful and just world, not only for humans, but for all living beings on this one and only planet we share.
